This colorful image comes from the telomere of a human chromosome. Telomeres are important structures that protect the ends of chromosomes from fraying and degrading much like plastic caps protect the ends of shoelaces. The pink tubes are nucleotides and the ion in the center of the image is potassium. We put this image on colorful magnets, buttons, and even miniature buttons so you could put telomeres on your refrigerator, bag, or locker.
